I bet you didn’t know that there are as many as 250,000 new nerve cells that can form in your baby’s brain every 60 seconds during pregnancy?

By the time your baby is born, his/her brain will have most of the nerve cells it will ever have – these are called neurons. However, as your child’s brain increases in size after birth, other cells grow around the neurons, insulating them – these are called glia.

Your baby is also born with trillions of connections between neurons – these are called synapses and as your child learns new skills many of these synapses become stimulated and connect permanently.

Your baby will have about 275 bones whereas a fully grown adult only has 206 bones.

The reason for the difference in number is this - as a baby develops some of their bones merge together.

To give you an example: a newborn baby has 33 bones in their spinal column and as they grow the lower vertebrae fuse together thus when growth is complete their spinal column only has 26 bones!

The largest organ of the human body is your skin. It is the only organ that is exposed to the outside world.

As well as holding fluids within the body, the skin also protects us from air, dirt, germs and water and helps to regulate body temperature by giving off heat.

Nerves contained within the skin are sensitive to touch and temperature and provide babies with information about the world around them.

Ever wondered why your baby's hair is blonde, brunette, brown, black or copper?

Our hair colour is determined at birth. It is both inherited and determined by melanin, a pigment deposited deep in the hair follicle. The darker your hair is, the more melanin it contains within.

It depends on your genes and how much melanin your body produces as to whether your hair turns grey or not in later life.
